Ascent from Mittenwald via “Schützensteig” (Duration 5½ hours approximately)

It starts at the car park along the Great Curve on the road from Mittenwald to Leutasch Valley.

Please note that there are very few parking lots! (It is recommended to park in Mittenwald center and start the tour from there). At the car park you walk a few meters on the Leutasch road up to a shooting range on the right. From there you follow the path slightly ascending. After half an hour or so, you first come across “Ferchensee”-Lake downhill on your right, followed by “Lautersee”-Lake on the way. At its highest point, the path leads to a forest road. From there you turn left and follow the “Schützensteig” signs. This path leads to “Wettersteinalm” from where you can either walk up a somewhat longer and more convenient forest road or take the path leading from “Wettersteinalm” via “Schachentor” (a gate-like passage between boulders) to “Schachen”.

The hike takes upon a good 5 ½ hours from Mittenwald-Village. It is about 9 miles long and has a difference in altitude of about 3900 feet approximately.

Especially for Mountain Bikers: Ascent from Mittenwald via “Bannholz”-Trail and “Schachen”-Trail towards “Schachen”

It starts at the car park along the Great Curve on the road from Mittenwald to Leutasch Valley.

Please note that there are only four parking lots! Hence bikers are advised to park in the center of Mittenwald, for instance at “Im Schwarzenfeld”. The course starts at the Great Curve along the road from Mittenwald to Leutasch-Valley. From there, it leads to both “Lautersee” – and “Ferchensee” Lake. Due to the G7- Summit of 2015, the narrow forest road has been broadened and tared completely. Having passed “Ferchensee”-Lake, you turn left and keep riding on the “Bannholz”-Trail, perfectly renewed as well.

At a short distance before reaching “Wettersteinalm”, the “Bannholz”-Trail meets the “Schachen”-Trail, leading to “Schachen” (as described above).

Distance about 11 miles, Difference in altitude 3900 feet.
